Revelation Award
at the 9th Small Format Painting Biennial

Painting «Tiro - Óptica 7» by Alexandre Coxo: a tree and two benches by the sea

At this 9th Small Format Painting Biennial I received the Revelation Award.

This is the second time my work has been recognised in this competition.

As in my previous entry, I competed with a landscape painting in oil on canvas.

The image above shows the award-winning work, titled "Tiro - Óptica 6". This painting belongs to the "Tiro - Óptica" series, which I developed in 2018. It measures 30cm x 30cm x 2.7cm. The linen cloth was prepared with grey gesso to allow a flatter, more detailed painting.

The "Tiro - Óptica" series is an attempt to create post-photographic photorealist painting.

The series grew out of Porto's urban landscape, which I have explored in recent years. The aim is to produce paintings with several levels of reading, so as to encourage active contemplation. Drawing on images of Porto's Romanticism, my attention turned to the places in the city where the wild coexists with the human.

Taking up the realist emphasis of the 19th century, and like the photorealists of the 20th century, I try to build images whose rigour is tied to the details of reality, but "based not on direct vision of the real but on a language developed from earlier images." (Maeyer, 1978)

It was a great pleasure to attend the opening of the exhibition and the awards ceremony.

You can see a painting from the series in the "À Sua Medida" tab on this site's home page or by clicking here.

Some works from the series are available at the CoArtCo gallery (visit the website here).
